it really depends on how your musels work. if you are bendable try going down slightly and slowly. if it hurts, do some stretches and try again after a little while. I hope this helps and if you can't of if hurts so badly you cant stand it, stop. you can really hurt yourself doing that. remember, only some people can do it, me, im one that cant. so if you cant, dont feel bad, you are not alone!

I've been a dance for around 11-12 years and I didn't start doing the splits right off the bat either. It's really ok. A lot of people cant do it their first try. I started by just working out my thigh and butt muscles, not just by dancing alone but also by stretching at home, too. I did a lot of stretching to get the splits down pat. Try some of these stretches I learned how to do the splits:
1. Try doing the splits on the steps at home. . . hold them for at least 30 seconds on each side.
2. If you do not have steps, try doing the same thing on a balance beam or get two phone books and try it like that.
3. When going to do the middle splits, go up to a wall and press yourself against the wall for at least 30 seconds.
I hope you find these stretches helpful to you. Normally this will come naturally and it should take about a week or two to get them down.

OK first you need to stretch the way i do it is fold one leg under my butt and put the other one out then try to reach you head to your knee it is a really good stretch do that on both legs. Then to stretch for your middle splits go it to them as far as you can while sitting on the foor, and then push your body against a wall while keeping your splits.
After you have stretched your legs go down as far as you can and hold it for about 5 min. do this on the right, left and middle. You should try to do this at least twice a day i used to do mine right before bed and in the morning when i woke up.
Another way you could learn to do them is by placing your leg on a wall and trying to get it as high up on the wall as possible. Good luck on your splits!!

(Joshv, that was so corny but funny.) Now, what you need to do is gain flexibility in the hip sockets, and that can be increased by lunges (bending one leg and the other leg is straight, touching your hands on the ground, and making sure that your knee isn't over your toes). Whatever you do to learn to do a split, take it slowly! There's nothing like popping your hip sockets every time you stretch. Trust me. Work your way to the bottom.

You won't be able to do it right off the bat. You'll need to stretch and build up muscles in your legs. Otherwise, you could hurt yourself very badly if you tried it (trust me from personal experience)
Try starting out with exercises, such as yoga. Yoga helps you build up strength and flexibility. Stretch out your legs everyday, like in V-sits. Then, gradually, start going into the splits postition, bringing yourself as far down as you can. Hold the position for as long as you can (not too long). You'll eventually be able to do the splits.
Good luck.

side split stretches:
1st stretch:take a thick book and put it down on the ground then put one of your feet on it and go down into the splits position as far as u can and hold it there for like 2 minutes and switch legs.then do it without the book.
2nd stretch:put one leg straight in front and the other leg fully bended and try to touch your foot that is straight and hold it for like 1 min then switch legs.
3rd stretch do the splits as far as u can down and hold it for 1 or 2 mins and switch legs.
4th stretch:if u can do the splits then hold your front foot for 30sec-1min then sit straight and bend your back and extend your arms backwards and do it with the other leg.
5th stretch: do lunges
middle splits:
stretch:do it as far down as u can and hold it there for 1 or 2min and rest for a few minutes and do it again.
and yoga would help
