The democrats always say they want better fuel efficienty and President Bush's offical position is that he does too. Why doesn't the democratically controlled congress write up a bill and pass it with only that that in it? This would help a lot of things such as energy conservation, pollution, global warming, energy independence and would help offset the rising cost of gasoline for consumers as the years go by and the price climbs. Does anyone have any reason not to pass a law that would do that, increase fuel efficienty 4% a year? I know the auto companies would belly ache about how difficult it would be but I think it would help spur inovation in the auto industry which I believe would reinvigourate it.

Call your congressman, tell him that this is an issue you would like to see addressed, and that he can even make a bipartisan effort and co-sponsor a bill with someone of the opposing party.

The really dumb thing about this is that there is already, available technology to improve fuel efficiency by 10%, at the same time, clean the emissions by up to 70%. On top of that, it is economical and saves the consumer money. So why do we need a law? People need to just wise up.

Because that may be how the law works, but that's not how politics works.

Bills are rarely every about just a single thing. Almost all of them have numerous riders, amdendments and attachments for entirely unrelated things.

That's just the way the political game is played, and the way it has been played for most of the last century.

OK because you spend your own money on gasoline and if you want to waste your money on a gas-guzzler you should have that choice.

Amazing these people - you should be free to risk getting AIDS, that's none of the state's business, but the state should tell you what you're not allowed to drive?
