They added sound.

"Sunrise" was the first full-length movie with sound (music, effects, and non-synchronised speech) - September 1927 (some shorts with synchronised sound were shown at the same time).

"The Jazz Singer" - October 1927 was the first real "talkie"

sound in movies came into play with the invention on the microphone and the new types of ways to record it in a good enough quality. film was real expensive when it first came out, to just record pictures was somethink. most sound was only availible on records, you couldnt record a movie on film and then sound on record. they had to invent somethink to do both of this successfully.
