Unless there is a failure in the ECM or a short-circuit in the wiring, the light is illuminating for a reason.
The ECM is programmed to store Diagnostic Trouble Codes for each cause of illumination.
If there is an intermittent problem, the code should still be retained, unless you disconnect the battery, or the battery goes dead.
Either find another mechanic, or ask that the trouble codes be retrieved and DIAGNOSTICS be performed.

Hi
No offence to the mechanic, but if the MIL lamp keeps coming on then there is a problem and he is in the wrong.
You need to have the fault codes read out, and contrary to the answer above which says you can't do it yourself and have to take it to a main dealer, anyone with an FCR (Fault Code Reader) can read the codes out for you. You can then, if you so wish, mail them to me and I shall tell you what they mean.
I would hazzard a guess that if the light is on and off then it is either a cam and crank correlation fault or a sensory circuit failure (cam, crank, MAF, TPS, ECT, etc...) .
have the codes read out and we'll take it from there.
Cheers
Geordie

Sensors turn warning lights on, computers when satisfied, turn them off. You have a problem your mechanic can't find because it is intermittent and he doesn't know how to read and repair from codes.
Computers set codes, and then turn off the light for a while. If after a period of time the trouble hasn't been fixed, the computer will turn the light back on to remind you it isn't happy with the sensor feeding it" I hurt" messages.
If your not using a dealer, you should.

I'm not positive but on American made vehicles you can disconnect the Black (Ground) battery cable overnight and the warning lights and computer will reset. try it.
My ex put gas in with the engine running which caused a check engine fault due to pressure being lost in the fuel tank. This was my remedy rather than taking it into the garage where they'd charge to clear the fault.
