Who knows what Bush means when he says anything. Nothing Bush has said about Iraq has turned out to be true. He claims that he never said "mission accomplished” and that the banner was put up by the Navy but that he just stood in front of it. He’s said different things about this at different times.

I think that "Mission Accomplished" referred to the fact that our troops invaded Iraq and attacked Saddam and his men with such power that they ran and hid. If I remember right, when Pr es. Bush made this speech, we had caught Saddam yet. He just was no longer in Baghdad and went into hidding. So then the mission had to change or a new mission had to be made to find and capture or kill him. That was the "We've got him" speech.

The navy carrier Abraham Lincoln had just finished the longest deployment by a nuclear aircraft carrier and asked that the mission accomplished banner be hung to commemorate the crews accomplishment. The White house agreed to allow the hanging and i believe a gov. agency had it made. In a speech the Pres. stated that this was" just the beginning of a long war on terrorism" Congratulations to the crew of the USS Abraham Lincoln. Sorry if your feat became political fodder

I think he thought that the mission actually had been completed. That mission was bring down Saddam Hussein's government, which was done. Of course, Bush and Co did not know that things only get worse from then on.

not sure, but typically when someone declares "mission accomplished" they take out at least most of the troops from that area....also keep in mind Bush didn't just say "mission accomplished" he said that it was the "...end of major ground operations in Iraq..."
since then there's been an increase in troops and around 3,000 deaths...
strange, I'd really like to know what our current mission is since we've done every single thing we originally set out to do and all we're really doing now is causing tension, fear, and death.

The President declared the end of MAJOR combat operations. Meaning that the heavy hitting was over. From the very beginning of 9/11 he has repeatedly stated that this war on terror would be a long one.
Wake up and smell the jihad people.

He meant that Saddam had been deposed. That was what the authorization for the use of military force defined as the objective, and what Bush was authorized to do.
Everything after that is an entirely different mission.
