The slash separates the different components of the address. The first part of the address (http:) is the protocol for communication (in this case, hypertext); I'm not sure what the second part (in the middle of the two slashes) is: it hasn't been used in years. The next part is the site name: that's the part that gets translated by your domain name server into a set of 4 numbers, which is the computer that the site is on. The remainder of the address is passed to the computer downstream, and usually, but not necessarily, represents the folder where the page you are requesting is located.

/watch means you want the "watch" section within this site
/436309 is a category within the "watch" category
etc...
