i do not want another aol memeber to know that i read an email that they sent to me, but i know they can check the status of their sent mail and see when i read it or if i read it. is there a way to read it without them knowing?

Unfortunately, the feature you mention is built in to the software of the e-mail program, so it's impossible for the other person not to know. Try using a Hotmail or Yahoo address. I've never seen an option or anything similar that shows whether a recipient of an e-mail has opened/read it.
