The popular stuff is what you'd call "Mainstream".
Le Chevalier d'Eon - 5 things make this great.
1. Production I.G. (The animation studio which has doen Blood+ and GITS SAC)
2. Realistic Alchemy/Psalms (Much better alchemy than Fullmetal Alchemist!)
3. Historical element - Versailles. Pre-Revolution France. 1700's. King Louis. Awesome dub from ADV Films.
4. The Music - OP/ED will have you pumped up - it's fn and exciting.
5. The Climax - It has to be the most stunning climax I've ever seen in an anime, and trust me, after watch 15+ years of anime, that's a big deal.

I absolutely LOVE Hunter x Hunter! I don't know if you've heard of this manga before, but it was pretty popular a couple of years ago. Now people are just waiting until the mangaka makes new chapters. There are 260 chapters out and the story stopped at a very high climax.
I'm usually a fan of shoujo manga, but Hunter x Hunter has so far been better than all of the shoujo manga I have read.
I like Hunter x Hunter because of Killua and Gon's friendship. I really love how they stick up for each other and would risk their lives for each other. I also love reading about how Killua and Gon grow stronger as they train to be the best.

Hunter X Hunter wouldnt be mainstream due to i havent seen in around in the main channels that display anime. Reason i find this great is because it consists all of the great aspects of which makes one great. The main characters will make you get attached with him. *especially the main lead character*, The story is great enough for you to watch more up til the end. And the animation is decent enough to make it enjoyable. I say decent being that Hunter X Hunter is abit of an old anime. But still good nontheless.
Another most recently dubbed anime but hasnt made it into Mainstream would be Gansutuou. Its basically a reworked version of the book "the count of monte cristo". The reason why i enjoyed this one is because even though the first episode started out kinda weak (i admit). It slowly climbs up into getting better and better. I would recommend this as well.

Mushishi- an amazing collection of short stories turned into an amazing anime. I believe it has actually been licensed for US release but is not out yet.
Victorian Romance Emma- a sweet 13 episode series about a maid in Victorian England who falls in love with a nobleman.
Monster- fantastic suspense series based on Naoki Urasawa's award-winning manga. About a doctor who saves a young boy, only to discover that the boy he saved has grown into a cunning, prolific serial killer.
Captain Harlock- the original 1979 Matsumoto series. I can't believe it's never been released in the US, you can find some Harlock stuff but not the original series.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes- 96 episode space opera saga. Totally addictive.

I haven't run across too many people that watch Eureka Seven. I love the storyline and the characters in that series; it's probably my favorite out of all the animes I've watched to date. Good luck finding something to watch!
