Why is marijauna illegal, when cigaretts and alcohol are legal? As far as I know no one has ever died from smoking pot, but every year thousands die from cigaretts and alcohol which is government controled, what are they up to?

it is a substance much like alcohol. I am very liberal about "pot", but do not want to work around someone under the influence of it. It is dangerous. I smoked a lot of pot when i was younger and I can tell you that the next day I may have been over the influence directly, but I was certainly in a haze...make it legal? sure, but do blood tests for people doing work that could get them or their co-workers hurt or killed. The same goes for any drug, alcohol, cigarettes around combustible material. If you want to be a pot head, it should be your choice, but you won't find work if you are a heavy equipment operator or even work in an assembly plant.

Also there is a connection between pot and harder drugs and you can't tell me differently. Right now the segment of the population smoking weed has a large portion of it that does everything else. If you legalize it, the same people will be smoking it and it will be decades before there is a difference between a person that just uses pot and someone that does all sorts of illegals

Marijuana is not illegal because it gets you intoxicated or is a "gateway drug", alcohol does the same thing and in a much worse and addictive way.
If marijuana was legalized, hemp (the non-narcotic little sister of MJ) would also have to be legalized.
Hemp can be used for everything from paper, to food, to fuel.
While it would be a stretch to say that hemp would wipe out the petroleum companies; it would without doubt take revenue from their pockets.
As recently as WWII, the U.S. government encouraged farmers to grow hemp to help in the 'war effort'. President George Washington grew hemp, as did many other founding fathers and U.S. statesmen.
Do a web search for hemp for a detailed look at the myriad of uses for this incredible plant.
Add to this the stigma that the political and religious overlords have placed upon marijuana and you can see why it will remain a no-no for some time to come.
Fortunately, there are a few glimmers of hope being reported in the media from time to time in the form of medical marijuana and personal use laws.
Someday my friend. Someday.

The reason that marijuana is not legal is very simple. Money. The government makes so much money off of marijuana arrests, that they won't legalize it. I am all for the legalization of marijuana. If not generally, then at least for medical purposes. Yes, bud is much less harmful than cigarettes and alcohol.. and both are legal. There are NO cases of death related to weed. Marijuana helps people with AIDS wasting syndrome and cancer eat, it helps with glaucoma, with spasms related to Multiple Sclerosis, it helps release migraines, headaches, cramps and etc. Not every "pot head" is the stereotypical stoner. For a lot of people it's really no different than coming home from a long day at work and kicking back with a beer.

but anyway, screw the government I’m going to go smoke a bowl =]

Every year Budweiser and Miller donate millions upon millions of dollars to the campaigns of politicians who support the war on drugs. Many people see the good in this but those who know understand it is just big government screwing the people! If marijuana is legal, do you think people are going to drink 3 days a week? No, they will drink 1 or 2 days a week and smoke one or two days a week or maybe even more. This wouldn't kill but it would certainly hurt the beer industry! By gaining the respect of the bible thumpers and extreme liberals, they are given a good public view by the people and their politicians will now do things for them in order to keep the money flowing in! Marijuana being illegal is as stupid and as costly as the income tax, government in marriage, subsidies, and war! The republicans and democrats are truly out of control and no one can stop them! They will tear apart every freedom they can! Every night you go to sleep they have some uneducated person working hard to take your freedoms in a free land! They are worse than any CEO and they do not give marginal benefits associated with marginal cost! People try to justify shampoo ingredients as proof that we need liberals as bad as marijuana bigots try to justify the needs of conservatives! They are both statistically and morally wrong but there is little hope while other people go out in flocks to choose between the next "Lesser of two evils!" ~ Libertarian

We have many double standards in our society, where alcohol and tobacco are legal when they are by far bigger killers than marijuana.
Many powerful lobbyist groups were behind the criminalization of marijuana. Interestingly, they were not organizations that had a strong "moral" focus, but rather ran industries like textiles (Cloths), food, rope, medicine, and petroleum, which are all industries that marijuana or hemp competes with. Rockefeller was a major advocate of the criminalization of hemp and marijuana, but it was for purely selfish economic reasons.
From a moral or health related stand point, there is no good reason to allow people to get cancer from cigarettes, or get into car crashes or destroy their liver with alcohol, yet criminalize the fairly benign marijuana plant.
Marijuana also has medical benefits, reduces the risk of some cancers despite having free radicals, is able to modulate the immune system in some auto-immune conditions, and is able to restore appetite and aid sleep with fewer side effects than conventional allopathic drugs. The drug companies are currently major opponents to medical marijuana.

There are MANY DIFFERENT TYPES of cannabis.... just like tomatoes.

I do not know the deal with 1937 but from what I read that was when the plant(cannabis) was outlawed... i think it has something to do with POLITIK... it is tragic that people would MURDER a CHICKEN and not have laws against that but then they turn around and have laws against a BUSH which produces SEED... what's the story morning glory>?

What about FERTILIZERS ? There are some DANGEROUS fertilizers which are sold "over the counter" which are REALLY DANGEROUS. And nobody seems to say anything about that....

FERTILIZERS which can potentially RUIN/trip-out plant varieties to make them less desireable to the HUMANS... not to mention the effect of the DANGEROUS FERTILIZER CHEMICALS on humans.

I mean in some cases the PARTICULAR chemicals I am speaking about may be beneficial for some but the way they are "MASS MARKETED" and sold to EVERYBODY well it can get very dangerous... acid tripping billies.....

I have never heard a good reason for it to be illegal, think about it, it's the one product that needs no additives, just bag and profit, that should be the approach, but I feel the higher powers in government are too narrow minded and uppity to realise all of the enormous benifits of that, I hope someday they come around , but I have no faith that will happen anytime soon, so that forces people to feel like they are doing this bad thing by hiding the use of it, I don't know.

the thank you to tax isn't the rationalization, because of the fact all of us know that the gov can discover the thank you to tax something. it rather is the place the revenue will bypass that's the undertaking. once I published a matching question the responses to my incontrovertible fact that Jamaica might gain lots of the revenue have been rebuffed asserting that they strengthen a lot greater effectual marijuana in the northwest, even nevertheless that's real, the cost distinction could be in choose of Caribbean international locations. occasion..maximum beer drinkers drink Budweiser, yet every physique who's familiar with beer is familiar with that Duval is a miles greater effectual beer, yet once you drink sufficient bud it gets the pastime performed. That being stated, in case you have been going to the keep on a widely used foundation to purchase marijuana, might you purchase an oz.. of hydro for $3 hundred or an oz.. of Jamaican which will definitely get the pastime performed for $one hundred? nicely the gov can not have you ever helping international locations that are of shade.

probably bc people would do marijuana and then try and go on with their live but screw something up causing them to be fired and when the were on the road they would get into a car accident causing a 3 mile pile-up causing hundreds of people to die or be seriously injured. all by smoking a little piece of crack. also maybe bc it killed so many people or bc people would bye and sell it illegally before it was illegal to smoke it. hope this helps! (or makes you laugh)

Because the public vote for politicians.
Politicians decided that it should be classified as a drug.
So, although most of them confess to having used cannabis, and some want it downgrading, they still decide it should be a criminal offense to possess or use or supply it.
Remember this next time - if ever - you vote.
