You take the bus from athens and it is about a 3 hour drive. However, there are not any significant remains of ancient Sparta (there is a museum though, and some archaeological sites, but nothing much to see). What is very important in Sparta and a world heritage site is Mistras, the Byzantine (medieval) city of Sparta, with the palace, as Mistras was the capital of a byzantine kingdom when the empire was separated. Also, you can visit Monemvasia, the medieval castle, a very nice town, about 1-2 hours drive from Sparta. You can also hire a car in Athens and drive to Sparti, and the surrounding area, but you must be very careful, because greek streets are dangerous! (I drive there once a week, it is not such a big problem, but for a foreigner who is not used to Greek driving, you need to be extra careful). Or you could hire a car in Sparta so that you can go around in the nearby area.
