Obviously a game where you kick a ball with your foot is called football...and thats how is happens in 99% of the countries around the world.
Unfortunately Americans are not very bright...football is probably too complicated for them...Imagine an American trying to understand the offside rule!
So they make up their own version of girly rugby and call that American Football (even though they play it with a rugby ball and it rarely comes into contact with a foot).

i'm not an expert but i guess its what you call hybridisation.
the same way rugby and soccer are both classed as football .here in Ireland we have Gaelic football an Gaelic hurling both are derivations on a theme.
i am niether American nor an expert on sport btw lol
the soccer comes for association not anything else football was invented by the british btw!!!

due to the american populace growing up infront of television and computers, their brains have rotted to the point where they believe that they can call a sport football, which involves kicking a ball once every 5 minutes and using their hands the rest of the time

I agree with you. Alot of people here think that "football" is the best sport around. I think its a lame excuse to throw a ball and beat the crap out of people.
It's not fun to watch.
It's not fun to play.
I think it looks pretty painful.
But to each his own I guess. America is a strange place yet all these weirdo's Love it here.

That is because the game starts out by kicking the ball, so they call it football. Americans also drive their cars in the parkway and park them in the drive way, hope I did not confuse you too much......KECK

The sport evolved from European football and rugby. It just retained the same name in the U.S.
