There are certain basic legal tenets that all social workers must know. For example all social workers are mandated reporters. Depending on your field there will be specific legal elements that you will want to know (e.g. age of consent, HIPPA, etc). As a social worker our work is often effected by policy from federal, state, and county sources so you should also have familiarity for this. DA

Social work will bring you into situations involving the
well-being of children in the middle of a custody dispute
or divorce or who are suffering from abuse or neglect.
Knowledge of the law will help you deal with the different
aspects of such situations as this.
If working with adult placement and protective services,
knowing the law regarding a persons rights, conservatorship,
power-of-attorney, estate rights, inheritance rights, property
rights.
In short, in order to be of practical service to the people
you will be working with, a working knowledge of the law
will help effectively put into place the solutions to problems
that you identify.

I would say family law is very inportant. I know at my college the law and social care students take the same module about divorce, custody, child protection, etc. It's also usefull to know a little criminal law in case your working with young offenders or sexual offenders, their victims, etc. It depends really on what field of social care you go in to!

Very important. You need to know the law in order to help vulnerable people against abusers/general crime.
You need to know when its time to involve the law and why.
