I am currently a sophomore in high school and I just realized how ignorant I am about testing (I missed the PSAT! I didn't even know about it!). So what I really need to know is what tests do I need to take, when do I take them, and how do I sign up for them.

First of all, it's OK that you missed the PSAT your sophomore year, but make sure you register for it next year because it really is a good predictor of SAT scores. For the UC's you must take the SAT or ACT and also 2 SAT Subject Tests of your choice. Taking the math level 2 is recommended (and you must take level 2 if you want to take a math, because they don't accept level 1). You should take the SAT in beginning to spring your junior year and subject tests at end of junior year/beginning of senior year. You have to go on collegeboard.com to sign up for SAT's online or get a SAT packet to sign up through the mail. That packet can be obtained from your guidance office. If you want to take the ACT, you go on act.org. However, don't take both the SAT and ACT, just take one of them.
