If you are confident and secure with yourself you can be as friendly as you want to be with her provided he agrees. Make sure he understands and talk everything over with him before you do her so there are never any suprises for him to hear through her grapevine but yeah I'd be nice and help her out especially if there are kids involved.

It depends on how long they have been separated and if they have children. I would say yes if they have been apart for a while, but don't talk to her about your relationship with him at all...obviously she was not able to make it work so why would you take her advise?

if you both get on then fine, i talk to my ex husbands girlfriend, i even got them to sort there problems out. as long as there is no baggage between them then its fine. hope your husband gets back safe quickly
