the first is plural and the second singular.
Une gateau........deux gateaux.....trois gateaux......etc...
.....which reminds me of a rubbish joke.
Bloke is in a restaurant and asks the waiter if he has any "gatox".
"Er.....do you mean gateau, sir?" the waiter says.
"No, I mean gatox." the bloke replies
"Um....no sir, we don't have any gatox" says the waiter.
"Oh....bolleau." the bloke says "Just bring me the bill then."
