I'm surprised most people say murder and rape. I agree to a certain extent with the answer above. If you say one thing is the worst crime, it makes the other 'less bad'. So I can't say what is worst: murder, rape, ... . However, I do think there are gradations. Genocide is worse than murder. Torturing someone to death is worse than just putting a knife in the heart and be done with it. But in the end, no matter how high or low on the ladder, all these crimes are horrible, and should be punished.
Life imprissonment seems quite pointless.
1/ These people live a better life than the poor, getting food every day, a warm -though small - room, people to talk to, ... . In some ways it is less a punishment than living in some far corner in Africa!
2/ Apart from that they get into contact with OTHER criminals, which, if you hope to better them, isn't exactly the right example. If you do not want to better them, then what use locking them up? It costs the government lots of money, and if it only serves to keep the rest of the society save, execute them.
I, however, think that executing someone who killed another person is fighting fire with fire. It's a way to scare people, but still... it's quite barbaric.
Punishement should serve to change a person. In a good way. It should be constructive, so this person can become a part of society again afterwards - maybe under control in the beginning.
If this is not your objective, if you just strive to get the bad people out of your society without caring what will happen to them afterwards... then stop wasting money on them, and put them on an electric chair, or whatever means of execution we have nowadays.
One last remark: castration seems like a suitable punishment for paedophiles and rape, but do you think these people would ever be able to function normally again? They will always be looking for revenge against everyone. You turn them against the world, make them even more dangerous. They shall never be able to forget, nor forgive. And since they can't rape anymore, they'll just look for 'fun' in other ways: murder, torture, ... .
It doesn't improve the situation a lot, does it?

I think this depends very much on the cultural context. Rape is very despicable in our society, but if you'd ask the same question in some other countries, they might consider this crime as less criminal.
Ethically is also very difficult to say, as inevitable you end up valuating human life against another. For example, what is worse: To rape and murder a child or to fly air-planes into skyscrapers?
Personally I would say there is no "worst" crime, because the moment you declare one crime as the "worst", you declare all the others as "less bad", which they are not not.
Punishment has always to be in line with the country's law, where ever and what ever the punishment is. If it is not, law is becoming criminal itself.

The worst crime, has to be the rape or killing of a child. The punishment, should be severe.

Rape or any kind of physical/mental abuse of a child.
The punishment should be the castration and cutting off of limbs (that way they can't take their own lives and will HAVE to be punished) before putting them in isolation in a tiny cell with just a bucket and daily crappy food. They can live as a blob and face justice properly without execution as an easy way out.

i don't knw about other people, but i would say the worst crime done- it actually happened- a man raped this woman, murdered by stabbing the knives again and again all over her and to destroy evidence, grilled her. as in barbecque. i'm not sure, but i think there was also caniballism. wel, the punishment would be leaving him to be eaten alive by hungry dogs or vultures. u can attract them by just traces of blood. Simply horrible! and also the nithari killings in india were brutal. children below the age of 12, from the poor working class were wooed, raped, murdered and the man also tried canibalism in this case, and threw the skeletal remains into the drainage. regular torture in jail and execution in public.

Crimes on children must be the worst. Id say smear the perp with female Gorilla scent and lock them in a cage with a mad male silver-back and see what happens , no mercy to these folks.

Got to be picking ure nose an eatin it. Especially when driving. Sooner they bring in the legislation the better. Dirty filthy pigs. For punishment how bout makin em eat somebdys snot who uses snuff. all thick an brown , lumpy an chewy sumfin that just wont slide down

I believe that murder is the worse crime but I would not go so far as to condone Capital punishment

Any sexual act against a child is beyond my thinking. The punishment should definitely be castration.

Any thing against a child any one who could hurt a child should be painfully killed so they could never do it to any one else. Sod prison they still get to live there lives(not the way hey want to) but it still is not good enough. Bring back hanging/stoneing and any thing else the parents of that child would want to do
