heat your iron and with a candle rub the plate of the iron . Then with an old rag give a good rub over it should come off

whack up iron to top heat and it should peel off with a palette knife(it will smell acrid) why are you sorry for the caps ?

Either keep ironing a towel, or do you remember those green cleaning soaps. if you can still buy them use one. if you can't remember them, ask your Mum.

Well toothpaste works on scorch marks.
Maybe try scouring off any stuck on bits first.
