Have we really let our social structure deteriorate to the point that bad grammar is acceptable? Teachers, I have to let you off the hook. So many parents don't correct their children's bad grammar.

The parents don't correct it because many of them don't know better themselves!

Several of my son's teachers have sent home papers with grammatical and spelling errors on them, and it makes me cringe! I want to correct them with a red pen and send them back, but I don't want my son to suffer the wrath of the teachers if they take it personally. So I just let it go.

My theory for the decline in writing skills is the fact that so few people actually read anymore. By reading, we expose ourselves to the written forms of the words, and their proper spelling and usage. Repeated exposure leads to familiarity so that we grow more accustomed to using the proper forms ourselves.

Using abbreviations for common words and phrases (e.g. TTYL, OMG, etc.) is one thing, but to write skewl for school? There's only 1 additional letter in the correct form, so what is the point?

Yes, language does evolve as it always has and always will, but there needs to be consistency in usage for the general population to be able to comprehend what the person means by what they have said or written. Very early in the my time on this site, someone responded to a similar question with the excellent analogy that reading something that is poorly written is like listening to a music that skips -- the natural rhythm and flow is disrupted.

On this site, I used to get SO aggravated at spelling and grammar errors! Of course there are many people on this site for whom English not their native language, so I will be patient if that appears to be the case. Still, I have decided that if I don't understand the question on the first reading, I will simply move on to another.

I had a laugh recently when someone used the word "practise" and was corrected by someone else -- I guess that the person doing the correcting did not consider that the other might very well be from England or have learned the Queen's English, as opposed to the Americanized version.

Many educational theorists are downplaying the role of correct grammar and punctuation and it seems this permissive philosophy is seeping into classrooms. The result is that our culture is forgetting how to communicate in its native language. Parents need to be sure their kids are learning the English language even if that means supplementing the kids' education in some way. One other reason is that kids are reading less as they devote more time to TV and video games. When we wake up and realize how poorly read our kids are and how badly we have undereducated them in their own native tongue, we will also find that those who found a way to educate themselves have a distinct advantage in the job market.

I agree.

Not only that, have you noticed that most of the people who use bad grammar are the ones who have a limited vocabulary?

Quite a few people seem to only have a vocabulary that only consists of words with one or two syllables.

I'm not a pro with grammar and punctuation but, some of these folks make me look like a genius.

Don't let teachers off the hook. My daughter's elementary school had a policy of not correcting spelling errors. Her third grade teacher wrote in her report card that she "accells in math."

I don't think it's that they're ignorant, I think it's that they're lazy. They're so used to typing in short hand with their friends that they can't be bothered to write correctly. It's atrocious, and needs to be combated by both teachers and parents. Kids need to learn when you can write in short hand and when you need to use correct grammar and punctuation.

It has been several years since I have been in an English classroom and most of those rules have left me. I was more of a math and science gal.
