Can't understand a reason for not wanting to use bittorrent unless it is that you don't know how to use it.
Bittorrent is a program for downloading stuff, works similar to other p2p programs (Ares/Napster/Limewire) only instead of looking for downloads with the p2p program you look for downloads in the internet(certain websites keep archives of torrents for example isohut.com) and you download the file that has the download information also called torrent. Bittorrent is the best way to find any anime and download it, direct downloads for whole series are rare and inconvenient since if for some reason you get disconnected from the internet/computer freezes you have to start all over.
You'll need a bittorrent program like Azureus just drag and drop the file into the window once you install and open Azureus. Download speed depends on how many Seeds(people sharing) and Leeches(people downloading) there are.

Okay. maybe my answer to your problem will be the most best one out of all the first 3 that made crappy answers.
Okay. have you heard of Sysreset? It's kind of a half chat half P2P kind of program. It contains rooms that consist of groups that fansub anime. They usually have bot systems in these rooms that you can leech off their fansubbed anime from. Without the help of bit torrent. Here's a hint on how to find the names of these rooms.
search or google the name of the anime you want. and then, torrent (example; Hunter X Hunter torrent). Now, you wont be doing this just to DL torrent files. Some results will give you sites that tells you the names of the fansub groups and where to get them on sysreset. youll know the names if they have the "#" symbol next to their group names. Just click on those names and itll give you info on what server they are in on sysreset. But i only do this method for old anime that mightve been tossed from the fansub group's room.
If youre looking for new anime and such like Naruto or bleach. you can easily find out whos fansubbing them and where to get them by going here http://www.baka-updates.com/
oh. and theyll sometimes give you links to certain fansub group's homepages where you just might direct download them. Thats another way of getting them without bit torrent.
oh, and to get sysreset. just download it at sysreset.com.
