Agreed. Cons are clueless.

They know history makes them look like a bunch of backward idiots, so on certain issues, they transform it from a liberal versus conservative issue into a Democrat versus Republican issue, and then hope that the person is stupid enough to believe the Republican Party was always synonymous with the South and conservatism.

You are correct and those telling you to go back to school etc. should study a little history and find out that the Republican Party of today is not the same party it was under Lincoln and not the same party as it was in the 1950's and early 1960's. It is pathetic that ignorant people think that the Republicans wrote or sponsored the Civil Rights Act in the 1960's -- it was promised by JFK in his inaugural speech, JFK sent it to Congress and after his death was championed by Johnson and Democratic Majority leader Mike Mansfield. It was opposed by Southern Democrats -- many who became Republicans after the bill was passed.

The entire south became democratic after the civil war almost to a man .
Just calling yourself a democrat does not make it so .
Everyone knows this who studied history .
republicans have always been the so called solid citizen who went to church on the weekends and worked hard to own his own business . At church he gathered the backing for his ventures and the cheap labor remember Man was cursed to work this earth with his hands and through his sweat .
The meek and the poor shall inherit the earth .

There was a time when I think republicans believed in God in this country but no more .
The republicans that run the party use religion and those people for their own agenda .
Sounds Good when George bush said he prayed about the decision to go to war .
Made so many people comfortable with his choice .

Liberals make the biggest difference in for people where it counts .
Quality of life .
Not one republican can claim that he has improved the lot of others without enriching his own pockets in some manner .

You are quite correct. "Republican" didn't used to be synonymous with "social conservative." Lincoln wasn't even religious. In his youth, he attended church TO MAKE FUN OF THE IDIOTS.
The American South is currently Republican because, during the Democratic presidencies of Johnson and Kennedy, they promoted the civil rights of blacks and women. The racists didn't like that, so they abandoned the party. I think it was Johnson who acknowledged that he had lost the South for decades because of his support for equal rights, which equals, of course, human decency.
The South is a cancer upon this nation, and I'm talking about the white folk as much as anything.

Those progressives (not the same as liberals) belonged to both the Democratic and Republican parties.

Political parties are not the same as political philosophies.

In fact, for most of this country's history, both liberal and conservative individual could be found in each of the major parties, in large numbers. That's still true today, though in smaller numbers.

The drastic polarization between conservative anti-liberal Republicans and liberal anti-conservative Democrats is comparably recent.

Lincoln was no conservative-that is the funniest thing I have heard all day. Lincoln was one hell of a conservative. Lincoln knew how to deal with the threat of rebel spies and those in the Congress that questioned how he dealt with the war. He did something simlar to what Bush is doing now. I wish Bush would go the extra mile and suspend Haebas Corpus like old Abe did, to really deal with the threat of terrorism in America. Abe Lincoln is called the father of the Republican party. Now remeber this, the KKK was started by Democrats. Democrats tried to filbuster the Civil Rights Bill and Democrats opposed ending slavery.

lincoln was a republican- but not socially conservative.

we can't talk about the history of political parties- republicans used to be decent people, neither party had any fashion sense, then money and greed became the gop, and now we have neo-cons

and even liberal democrats- the anti war crowd- has had presidents who've gotten caught up in war fever, imperalism, and boarderline nationalism in the past

Yeah, why don't you talk a little bit about how Woodrow Wilson treated the suffragettes? You know, like ordering them force fed, held in conditions the federal courts ruled unconstitutional, etc...

If you believe Wilson was a supporter of women's suffrage, you slept through that chapter of US history.

Lincoln was to a conservative!! He freed the slaves, it wasn't any liberal! Had it not been for the liberals we wouldn't have had to have that awful Civil War!!! Where do you see conservatives against women voting, or the civil rights act? If you are going to slam the conservatives get your facts straight first!
