Currently about 36,000 species are known. In
a recent year that I checked 650 new ones had
been described. Current estimates are that the
actual number in existence may be somewhere
between 4 and 10 times the number known now.

I know there are 800 species of tarantulas, so the answer must be thousands.

There are over 600 different species in the UK alone
