You can die from having children no matter what your diet is - its the worst thing you could do to your body and in 3rd world countries that the primary cause of death for women as it was in this country until the last century.

However when you are pregnant drs monitor your iron - vegetarian or not, and they will advise you if you need to up your iron level. My friend/sister/mother are all anemic and they were given higher dose iron pills when they were pregnant and you can also get iron from green leafy vegetables. By the way there are millions of vegetarian women in the world who give birth everyday. When you are ready to start trying discuss diet options w your dr before you actually become pregnant.

My cousin was a vegan when she became pregnant (for religious reasons...she is buddhist) And she fully intended to remain vegan throughout her pregnancy. However, all she craved was meat! lol she actually gave in to her body's cravings after a month or so and she has been a meat eater ever since! The way I look at it, if you are pregnant and your body is TELLING you to eat something, you probably need the nutrients that that specific food provides.

As far as being anemic goes, your OB will watch you VERY closely to make sure your iron levels are high enough. Spinach is a fantastic source of iron. When I was pregnant I was borderline anemic in my third trimester. My doctor "prescribed" a 1/2 cup cooked spinach a day haha. It kept me healthy!

As far as iron suppliments go...they can actually cause constipation (ESPECIALLY in pregnant women...blame it on the hormones!) So I would suggest you work with your doctor to find ways to natural add iron sources to your diet instead of using a pill. Afterall, who wants to deal with constipation while their pregnant??

You will not be more likely to die than any other woman who is pregnant. There is always a chance, but there is also a chance you could get struck by lightening!! :)

My advice, you will need to pay SUCH close attention to everything you eat. You will need to work with your OB and probably a diatician to come up with a pregnancy diet that will keep your baby (and you) healthy.

For some women anemia creates a big problem and doesn't for others. I was anemic for years before my first pregnancy and continued to be during, and didn't have any problems during child birth other than the fact that I have a bad heart. I used to take pills and ate meat and stuff trying to take care of my anemia and it wouldn't go away. It finally did like a year and a half after I had my son. He's about to turn three and I haven't had any more problems.

No you won't die they will first give a Vitamin K shot in your butt that HURTS. Vitamin K is a clotting agent, I had to have this after the birth of my 3rd child. A piece of placenta was left inside too long before they retrieved it and I wouldn't stop bleeding. The next step would be a blood transfusion if the Vit K doesn't work. So no you would not likely die from it, but you need to get your iron stores up NOW. Take your vitamins and eat iron-rich foods...Quaker oatmeal is an excellent source as are raisins and some leafy green veggies such as kale.

Anyone can die from complications from childbearing, but being a vegetarian or vegan isn't a risk factor in particular.

I would be more concerned about your fetus getting the nutrition it needs for proper development during the pregnancy. Before you ever get pregnant, you should consult an OB/GYN to get a pre-natal work up so you can be healthy prior to getting pregnant.

As for getting enough iron, spinach and nuts are excellent sources.

You must check with your doctors.
Because you hav eto be on the best interest of your Baby, so you have to take extra care for your unborn baby's health.

If you know your iron deficincy is due to your diet and consumption of iron... you may wanna intake the variety of healthy foods that contains iron and you don't have to eat meats, you can substitue.
Iron is widely distributed in foods. Of the plant foods, good sources include legumes, whole grains (including wholemeal bread), wheat germ, oatmeal, green leafy vegetables, peas, broccoli, potatoes, nuts, seeds, peaches and dried fruit.

Doctors may suggest you to change your diet a little before pregnancy. It doesn't mean that you have to eat meat. Check to a doctor when it happens, and he'll be able to guide u thru.
