It only matters if there's likely to be confusion whether the date refers to 2007 or 1907.
That isn't the case with your yellow pages, gas bill or credit card bill

It doesn't annoy me, but I accept your point.
How it affects me is the reverse situation when they give us a tiny space on forms to put the date. I always put the full date in that space, including the full name of the month, it is their problem if it is too small for them to read.
