On the neck you mean? By the first fret? Yeah, i've done that, sometimes i also use a short length of t-shirt material too. The reason i do it sometimes is to muffle any open strings that may ring out when i'm playing in a certain register. I don't do it all the time mind you, and i can muffle the strings with either hand, but sometimes when i work on stuff i like the other strings not to ring out - and this makes it easy. Also useful for just noodling around with the left hand only. They make "Dampers" that flip down for the same deal, but it's just a hassle to install and all that.

The idea is that the other team's defender, out of the corner of his eye, might not know which one of you is Paul Pierce so it takes him a few seconds more to figure out which one of you is Paul Pierce before he moves over to double cover him, because once he's double covered your team is completely impotent.
Oh, wait, that's why the Celtics wear sweatbands on their heads.
