new batteries need to have a very full charge the very 1st time being charged. then every so often they need to be ran completely dead and fully recharged again. they develope a "memory" and start thinking that they are dead when they really aren't

Yeah, when you first get a battery, charge it for 24hours, don't even go near it, then when you use it, let it go totally flat, the fully charge, don't just charge it when it is at 75%!, cos batteries only have a finite amount of good charge sessions.

For example, Dell batteries are meant to last 300charges according to the site

That must be very expensive, always buying batteries.

Either you are not following the recommended procedures for charging the batteries or the charging circuit in your laptop is bad.
