i am not asking if you think its right he should be required to..or that its his duty to do so...but simply whether you would like to hear those words come from the mouth of the leader of your country for the deeds and decisions of previous leaders...and to stand as a collective expression of regret from todays britons about the deeds of previous britons.

i dont know if a serving u.s president has ever made such an apology on behalf of the actions& decisions of former presidents..but if not..the same question is open to american replies.

personally, i do not think an expression of regret is a sufficient response to the magnitude of that past injustice...especially from the leader of the nation.
whilst i think it is proper that modern citizens choose or dont choose to express regret..i think the modern representitive of the decision/law makers of the past should apologise for the stance of historical governments.

were English, we don't apologise...

we allowed millions to better themselves as members of the commonwealth... we didnt gas them, we didnt torture them just for the hell of it, we didnt mistreat them too badly... we gave them shoes, and food, and an education...

we gave them a chance... what have we to aplogise for.. did the yanks apologise for dropping nukes on japan? what about adolph, or saddam, or pol pot, mao or stalin...

all they did was commit genocide... we ravaged teh entire world... if we say sorry once, we re aplogising forever...

you should be saying thank you...

You can put certain people in power but you cannot know how they will lead a country . So even though I understand your meaning I must state in my opinion that it would not help what has already transpired. Any individual can apologize for the wrongs done by others from the past but to make a difference I think it is the future actions that will define the new regime. An apology from the present for the actions of the past will not erase the tragedies or loss that has occurred. Learning from the past and changing to better the future of one's own country and the future of all countries to exist , without dominating any for self gain will not fix the past but will provide a better foundation for communication amongst all.

I strongly disagree, it would be unreasonable for a current administration to apologise for the actions of even their most recent predecessors, never mind things from the distant past, it is not their fault, what they should apologise for is the mistakes they've made themselves, of which there have been many

We aint got nothing to say sorry about. We didnt do it personally. You show me someone alive still that was involved the the slavery trade, and i'll agree to the apology.

It's just our Tony trying to make out he cares. How about caring about hear and now. The countrys a sh!t hole. With enough to worry about.

no i do not want to hear words that mean nothing to me, the vast majority of americans NEVER owned slaves. there is no one living today who was a slave, owned a slave , or even knew a slave. the past is the past learn from it and move on. i'm more worried about the current abuse of my people (the Cherokee) by our government.

I'm more worried about the second person who answered, who thinks that Bush is the Prime Minister!

Why should we apologise?when half the slaves were being sold by their own people, and by arabs.
How many slaves have you met?
So many come over here, draw benefits, then complain about England being a rich country..

I would not like to hear such a proclamation. Everyone who participated in slavery is long dead.

That's ridiculous.

Despite the fact Bush has alot to apologize for, the wrongdoings of our ancestors are the least of them.
