Well, you don't exactly have to read the whole thing.
Just print out analysis and characterization off the internet.
The main events: The main character is called Holden. The story takes place at christmas and he has been kicked AGAIN out of his boarding school. He goes to sleep in a teacher's house but then thinks that he is gay, so he runs away, sneeks into his house and meets Pheobe his sister. Eventually, he gets home. But you have got to know that he is very depressed and that the Catcher in the Rye's main theme is the corruptance of society. Also, that he is scared , so when he skips in the street alone, he makes believe that his dead brother is holding his hand to secure him, so he won't die. He wishes to be a man who stands at a top of the hill and tries to catch the children so they won't fall.
Good luck : )

Go to the Spark Notes web site. They may have a detailed summary. You could also do a search about John Lennon's murder. The guy who killed him was obsessed with the book. Some of the news articles have a lot about the book just so you understand why the killer was crazy.

I'll do you one better, I will describe it for you as briskly as I can:
-Its about some dude named Holdon Caulfield(sp?)
-He was kicked out of private school and didnt tell his parents
-He gets a hooker and just talks to her, and then gets roughed up by her pimp.
-He has a dream that he is in a field at the edge of a cliff with a bunch of little kids running around and he is trying to catch them and keep them from running over the edge.
See, i just saved you about 20 hours of your life. You can thank me later.

except for sparknotes and cliff's notes, you won't find much. It's hard to even find quotes from the book, because the author is very protective. I've never seen such good screening of sites trying to show off mere quotes of his work.

I doubt you're going to find it on the web; it's still under copyright protection.
But there's this - see link below, please.
And there are summaries of all the chapters - see second link, please.
