I plan to do some sewing in college, to make some money on the side, but it is OBVIOUS that i need a new machine. i currently have a singer 6233 from like the '80's, and its missing alot of stuff. Should I go the american apparel way and make jersey stuff with a new serger, then save enough to get myself a good sewing machine, or buy a new, fully equiped sewing machine, and save for the serger?

As a sewing machine technician I can tell you that the machine you have (if working correctly) is all the sewing machine you may ever need if you just keep it serviced once a year. (about 50.00) As far as it missing a lot of stuff (attachments ?) your local Singer dealer can help you out. I can't imagine you needing more than the standard zigzag foot. Unless you need a zipper foot or whatever. A serger is a compliment to a sewing machine not a replacement. Though there are many things you can do with it. If I were you I would just have your Singer serviced. Cleaned, oiled and adjusted... then look for a good Serger. Bernina, BabyLock, etc. A new sewing machine even with overlock stitches is never going to cut off excess material like a serger. If you want to make and sell clothing your machine is good enough but get the serger for the finishing touches. Good luck.

You could get a used sewing machine or serger fairly cheap. Even if you buy a serger, you'll still need a sewing machine for most of your sewing.
You could take your current machine to a Singer store and have them check out what you need for your machine and if it's worth the money and effort to get it up & running. I have an old Singer machine and it's great. I take it in for tune ups every couple of years and do a lot of sewing. I do enjoy my serger, but if I had to make a choice, it would definitely be the sewing machine. good luck

I really good sewing machine will take you far. I have a serger and really don't use it often. I get way more use out of "old faithful" (an early 1970' s White sewing machine).

I would get the fully equipped sewing machine. I purchased a serger thinking it would save me time and trouble. It didn't do either. Don't get me wrong - I like my serger, but I use my Pfaff 1500 much more (and it has overlock stitches on it). Best of luck with your purchase.

No a serger would not have the comparable applications as a typical stitching device; that is why people who're truly into stitching usually have 2 separate machines. although, in case you carry out a sprint finding and comparing you will discover fashions that have an attachment that helps you to serge a seam on a typical device. Mine is a Singer and the attachment became greater yet worth each penny! It became nonetheless plenty greater low priced than paying for yet another device and takes up plenty much less area for storing!

They are two different machines for two different jobs. A serger is really for just seaming. If you intend to make and sell garments, the serger will give the seams a finished edge.
