I know that sometimes players play out of position, I know that sometimes better players get overlooked, I know there are injuries, and freak bobbles of the ball etc, but what I'm asking is when so called world class players can't beat mediocre opposition, why doesn't more heat fall on the players. I know McLaren isn't good enough to be an international manager but surely the so called world class players should be able to get a win out of games against Israel Croatia and Macedonia ( at home ) even if anyone on here had picked the team and system. The team isn't winning change the manager... how about the team isn't winning, change the team?

You can't always blame the manager, I'm afraid that we just don't have enough talent at the moment, we need a left footed player and we need Beckham and Owen back.

That'll never happen as maclaren will never call Beckham up as it would be him admitting his own mistake.

We played well last night but well isn't good enough, we need to score goals, he needs to drop Lampard and switch Gerrard and Lennon around.

I hear what you're saying and agree to a certain extent. However I would add that a contributing factor to the poor performances is the fact that the players just don't play together enough..... Its the reason that team performance tends to improve during a long tournament like the World Cup (thinking back to the last one perhaps I'm talking rubbish). I do think that if we really want a successful International team we (the authorities) have to find a way of introducing regular and meaningful international competition. Perhaps a reintroduction of the home championships? Needless to say this is yet more football so probably not feasible.... Without regular games we will never get the cohesion needed at the highest level...

Well, the players are good. We all know that for sure. But the way England plays their soccer isn't working anymore. I do admit that kick-and-rush style of England did work before, but now that so many nations have experienced same routine of someone in midfield kicking the ball far into the opponent's turf and all the forwards and attacking midfielders rushing for the ball, other teams know how to react and set up an offside trap fast enough to make the kick and rush not work anymore. What I mean is that their strategy just don't cut it. England needs to look for a new game plan that brings out the best in all the players, especially from Rooney, Lampard, A. Cole, Downing, and Hargreaves.

As a "coach" of the national side he has a very simple job of hand picking the players that he best thinks have the ability to beat their opponents. He has no need to improve the skills of the players as they are already of the highest quality. McClaren, however, obviously is not up to this. Why play Lennon on the left? The only reason I can think of is that he can't make a decision on the central midfield pairing and have enough cojones to drop lampard, who has regularly failed to reproduce his club form at international level. Gareth Barry has been outstanding this season, playing on the left of midfield and naturally left footed. The players we have ARE good enough, but the muppet trying to fit them into a playing side isn't.

to answer your question no mcclaren is not good enough! he was too closely linked with eriksons shambolock regime! He is a poor manager who has achieved nothing at club level and has no tactical initiative but apparently he is good enough to manage are national side?

as for the players in my opinion too many players in that side feel that there position is safe and too be honest who is going to replace them! they have no passion for the shirt and are a discrace to their country!

look at northern ireland for example a couple of players in the england team have more talent in their right arm but individual talent doesn't win games at international level its down to the team. and england are not a team the are a bunch of pre madonnas !

Personally, I think that Owen's return will do the side a whole load of good, when he comes back. Maybe (and as much as I hate to say it, being a Spurs supporter) giving Walcott another chance and putting him alongside Lennon, it could work well.
The only other option... Beckham?

They are good enough players, but I agree they should get more heat than what they do get. They are all fantastic with their clubs, but they just have not been able to get it together for England, and I think that is obviously partially their fault.
