Personally I intensify my imagination through lack of sleep... usually not my choice.... but when I'm sleep deprived I mentally sit back and watch what my imagination creates.
I won't drive or do anything that needs focus by being awake when I'm that tired.
Also, when I'm that tired I have trouble falling asleep and at that moment of rest with my eyes closed images and thoughts race through my mind's eye.
It's freaky to 'watch'.... Just wish I had time to write or draw the thoughts and images.
Never needed drugs to enhance my imagination... it's cheaper and healthier.
Also 'exercising' the imagination 'muscle' works well... work on things however small on a daily basis... look back on that work to inspire or elaborate with new ideas... I did that back in the day before my job sucked the 'life' out of me.
Some people also swear by daily meditations...Sadly, I've never been able to take the time to try it.
If you are looking for ideas for yourself to improve your imagination I hope what I've written helps you out a bit.
Good day!

Immerse yourself: reading, creating, attend variety of musical functions, various cultural activities, museums, galleries, zoo, nature hikes, city hikes-expand your world-explore. OPEN your ears by listening to audio tapes, radio talk or dramas (REAL GOOD!), and the more varied the peo. you talk to the more you will expand your understanding of how the world works-think of old folk who can tell first hand of a "place" that is immpossible to reach; the past. Ask foreignors (cab drivers oft have time an their hands. Or clerks.) DO NOT LOOK TO DRUGS!!! ie, J Lennon faded big time after he sunk into herion. Clapton and others have varified it is not necessary (& much cheaper, too).
Also, see what things are like when you do them totally differently: brush your teeth with the other hand, even put the other leg on first for a change, loop your shoelaces the other way, etc. This will rewire the cerebrum and remind you of what childhood was like-an imaginitive time, right?

I believe thoughts are very powerful, so you first need to believe that it is possible and talk to yourself more positively.
