Today I noticed on the side of my house, a large amount of insects that I've never seen before. They are about the size & shape of a lightning bug. They are completely black except for small red markings on the back. There is no specific design to the markings...each bug seemed to have an individual set of marks. They are flying bugs and, like I said, were in a large group of about 100 all on the side of my house. I live in Ohio and the weather has just began to get warm. If any one knows what type of bug this may be, please let me know. I've been searching and searching, but I haven't found anything yet. Thanks so much!

I live in Michigan. Im not sure if im spelling it right but they are called boxelder bugs- or at least thats what the name sounds like. They are all over my backyard and I am 100% sure thats what it is because they look just like lightning bugs only black and red.

Have an exterminator look at them or a bug expert near your location. You could go to the library or book store like Chapters. I did go to Chapters and found a quite a big book with really good pictures and description of each bugs around the world. You have to take time to go through the book to find it which took me about approximately 3 hours to find what I was looking for and turned out to be a bug that eats nuisance bugs like silverfish and so forth. I would be careful around these bugs just in case they are not wasp like insects which could either hurt or kill you because they may carry some kind of poison. Better safe than sorry, and again call an exterminator. Good luck.

Sounds like box elder bugs. I've had hundreds of them at my house recently. They tend to group together on the sides of houses, like you mentioned. Look up "box elder bugs" in Yahoo's Image search and see if this is your bug.

Hope this helps!!
