I guess I should start off with my age, I'm 17. Yes, I fit into the category of the generation I am talking about, but I can't stand what my peers listen to! I am a musician, and I've been told by my friends, who are musicians and not, that they respect my musical opinion. So, when I'm asked to listen to a song by a band with a name that is VERY out of the ordinary (Panic! At The Disco), playing a song that is very simplistic, I cry. These names are new and fresh, and are showing people a false message of, "They have a long name... they must suck!". Not to mention the song name being a sentence long.

Now, I know I shouldn't focus on appearance, I should focus on the music. What music? Music is supposed to be enjoyable to ones taste. A unique experience, on that you haven't witnessed before. But almost every song sounds the same! And if it IS something new, It's just a guy screaming his lungs out at a screeching pitch, just to have no one understand him! What happened to talent?

You are so right my friend. All of this "music" is pure crap anymore. It has no meaning and no depth.

Talent left the bands and became session musicians.

No good music these days especially when something so god damn awful as My Chemical Romance is classed as something good.

In their Live show, the lead singer comes out on a stretcher and pretends that he is hurt. During Nirvanas tour of Nevermind, Cobain comes out in a wheelchair and pretends he is hurt.

The difference with the above, Kurt Cobain cared about music. All EMO bands care only about one thing - How much mascara to wear. Rock is dead due to these idiots and everyone who buys into it.

dpj5, thats an insult to Waters, Gilmour, Mason, Barrett & Wright. As for Bowie etc... then there is still one difference TALENT. Everyone tries at some point to make their albums even remotely resemble The Wall or Darkside when doing a concept album and every single one of them fails.

Thats the beauty of those 2 albums, you can try all you like but in the end unless the talent is there - you will never accomplish it.

In 10 years time, no member from My Chemical Romance will be in the Top 100 guitarists, vocalists, bassists or drummers lists. Their talent is a cliche that they have thrown themselves on. Pander to the manically depressive everyone hates me, I hate the world, teenage crowd. A fad that will not last because they haven't the talent to make it last.

I am a classically-trained musician, and also got sick of what peers of mine listened to, since it was mainly what their parents listened to (hippy rock basically) and, although I respected their choices, I could not get drawn into these pot-infested tunes. So, I started blasting Gershwin, Tchaikovsky and Franz von Suppe. To my surprise, everyone responded pretty well to these wonderfully talented composers. Try that first, and let them know your side.

Now, I did find a genre I got into VERY easily, which requires immense amounts of talent, and can infuse everything from swelling violins to latin guitars. It is trance. Not many people listen to it, and they should at least give it a chance. And you know what? I thought it was about "e" infested raves and such, but if you speak to these men (which it is the only genre I know of that the composers will talk with you, shake your hand, and give you a hug) you find out they are true musicians, and definitely work many hours. They travel around for others' happiness, and that brings them great joy. And you'll be happy to know there are not many vocals in it either. I hope that I helped! ~N

Right on mate. The modern stuff doesn't even compare to those of the 60's and 70's. I'm a guitarist and i'm 18 and the 70's are just the best. You know, zeppelin, floyd, sabbath, etc. The modern stuff is crappy, no-one has any ideas any more, no one even tries to do something new and fresh.
As for your question of what happened to talent. I guess that everyone is blinded my money and forgotten that music is more than just a mere living, you have to actually love music to create it.

Wow. I feel for you and ABSOLUTELY agree 100%. They do all sound alike. I remember when you could hear the first chord or lyric from a song and knew immediately who was doing the song. Now it seems that everyone has the same lyricist doing the writing and they are all playing to canned muzak. I thought it was just ME and it was because I am an old fart. So, keep going with your music and your own uniqueness...maybe you will be the next Jimmy Page or Eric Clapton. The world NEEDS you!!

Every generation has it's own Top 40, pop music garbage pile (Even the 60s, 70s, and 80s), and this generation of teens is no different.

The good news is that there IS good music being made out there, it's just that you have to look a little beyond the Wal-Mart Top 40 rack.

RE:Obtuse
I'm 38. I like My Chemical Romance. Specifically Black Parade. That album draws alot from Pink Floyd and Queen. Great album. BTW, don't think makeup is new or uncool. David Bowie, Queen, Kiss to name a few who wore makeup and still had talent.

I'm 16, and I'm also really tired of this new music of our generation. I mean, each generation had great music, just our's has no good music. Nothing is even creative anymore, its just copying past generations. I love rock and our generation just has teh worst rock ever.
