Having lost my job in this wonderful economy that is Michigan, I have noticed that my wife seems to get farther when talking to people we owe money to than I do. I also notice she gets a lot of people mentioning to her about how she is "holding it together" even when I am the one still figuring out how to pay all the bills.
This makes me wonder if that when a guy is down on his luck, people think he is just lazy and can get a job digging ditches if he wanted to but if women are down on their luck people think it is because her guy is lazy.

Sometimes that is true. For one thing everyone looks at a male as the stronger of the two. Men don't show their emotions like we women do, so thereforth when we are talking to someone those show. I have seen some men who could make you cry with their hardluck story. It is according how it shows with you, plus you men tend to have more pride when it comes to money and such. It will be only a matter of time before you will be back on your feet. Don't let what others think get you down, you know what kind of person you are and that is all that counts.

well, when it comes to financial issues, we men are known to let our pride get in the way of sound decisions and arguments. People will be able to shame us into giving them more than we can afford to by attacking our pride.

Women are regarded as being more honest with these things, and are less likely to be manipulated (also because they are master manipulators) because it is not a pride issue with them. They tend to feed off drama, so these difficulties are right up their ally so to speak.

I am sorry to hear of your difficulties due to the Bush economy. Good luck to you and your family. Hang in there, Bush won't be in there forever. There is light at the end of the tunnel.
