...For a travel destination in South Africa? We often propagate the Kruger Park, Cape Town and it's winelands, the beaches of KZN, Gold Reef City...things like that. But do you know of a really awesome place to go in South (or southern) Africa that is not in the general limelight? Please, tell me your secret - I know you have one...

Crazyed, you're right, I didn't mention Sun City. But I (and everybody) know the list of well known places. The aim of the question is to spread interest and tourism to the lesser known SA. To find the rough jewels in the golden crown.

Jack D, yes those places are remote, but incredibly beautiful. Few things beat an Orange River canoe safari down the canyon. And Augrabies Falls in full flood is worthy of being Vic Falls' little brother. The Kalahari Transfrontier Park in the same area is also amazing. SA's very own desert park.

Takenotice, I've only been through Kalk Bay once or twice to go cave crawling in the infamous Kalk Bay Caves (a great destination in itself for adventure seekers). But the way you describe it, it would definitely be worth a revisit. I believe trains go that way from Town, right?

Kalk bay in Cape Town.(Near Simons town) Its a great place to watch the Southern right whales between June and december. Its a lovlely little village ,which still has a strong fishing culture. There are lovely restaurants, and tiny little antique shops .Most of the buildings are very old and it has Fantastic sea and mountain views . One of my favourite places in the country. !!

Stellenbosch PROTEA hotel(Technopark) is great, not too far from lots of fun things malls, vineyards and beach. Good service, big clean rooms and a reasonable price.

Also PROTEA hotel at Gold Reef City is good, in the middle of the theme park. We won a weekend there, about R2000 per night so its not cheap but definately one that you should try one day!

Sorry its both the places you mentioned! We've stayed in other places and types of hotels, these two stand out in my memory the most!

PS Cant recommend KZN right now considering all the damage

For hiking I enjoy the Tswaine Crater just outside of Pretoria, the entire reserve and crater itself are spectacular and I dont think that well marketed.
