Australia joined the War in 1939 because (as the Australian Prime Minister put it at the time) 'Great Britain is at war, and consequently Australia is at war'. Australia was part of the British Empire, no part of the Empire did not join the war on the British side. There was 'no question' of Australia not being involved.

The equivalent concept would be (for example) Texas not joining the rest of the United States in declaring war on Japan following Pearl Harbour.

Australians initally fought in North Africa, Greece and Crete against the Germans and Italians. In 1942, after the Japanese attacks these troops were gradually brought home to fight in New Guinea and the Pacicific Islands.

Forget the Japanese threat. The simplest answer is that they are/were a British colony. All members of the Commonwealth were involved in both World Wars, whether they were in immediate danger or not (look at Canada and South Africa, for example).

As a member of the Commonwealth they sent troops to help Britain against Germany. When the Japanese moved south at the end of 1941, they found themselves in an uncomfortable position with so many of their troops in North Africa and elsewhere, and there was a real threat that the Japanese might invade against minimal opposition, simply because they didn't have the troops to cover the geography.

They were part of the British Commonwealth. Same thing with New Zealand and the canadians.(Anzac)

British were having a rough time being bombed by Germany. Sending in their "colonies" in got the heat of the Brits to an extent. It also helped the Brits try to maintain a handle on their asian holdings like Hong Kong and others that the Japanese were eyeing.

The US was not attacked by Germany but they too found a reason to rally support to aid the Brits.
