When I go on Youtube I can either watch the file immediately (with occasional stop-start problems) or wait until it seems to have downloaded before I watch it.
The file must therefore be on my PC somewhere - but where ??

Check your temporary internet files.... they won't have the same name...just a sting of numbers.

They go into the cache for the browser. They have very strange names and no extensions so they are hard to find. The are sometimes automatically deleted after they are played. Try searching thought the cache for very large files before ending the playback and quickly make a copy. You may have to experiment with the suffix.

I have always believed that YouTube files were streamed and in that case this won't work. There are extensions that will save the entire file for you. They seem to be mostly Adobe Flash.

The file was put along with your temporary internet files:
c:\documents and settings\YOURNAME\local settings\Temporary internet Files\Content IE5\SOMEFOLDERNAME.
You can change this location thru Internet options to make the folders easier to get to. do a search of all the temp folders for *.wmv, *.avi, etc.
also, do the search *before* tou close internet explorer; if you have the option set to "delete temporary files when I close my browser" you'll never find them!

You can copy videos from you tube by downloading and using ares tube, a free tool you can find online. It stores them in itunes, and you can then watch them on your computer or ipod any time you like.
