Appologising for history is political correctness gone mad. You cannot rewrite history only learn from it and move on. Will Italy be blamed for the Roman Empire which was built on slavery or for the crucifixion of Jesus? Of course not!

Has anyone actually asked you to apologise? I don't think you should. It was centuries ago, I'm black and don't see why I could possibly want an appology from you. I've had nothing of that pain of being a slave, let alone got any grief with the ancestors of the people who may have caused it.
An who cares if the tribes made money, it's the slaves who were suffering and didn't want to be slaves, they weren't making any money. Just coz their the same race you can't count them as a representative of the slaves, because they came from their tribe. The tribe was in the wrong like people who bought them. I mean do you think because your a certain colour, you represent the entire want of your race?

It is true that slavery is the world's oldest economic system. However, it is also true that the (Southern) United States was the very last of the enlightened Western democracies to condone this institution. It doesn't matter that the Africans and the Arabs wanted to continue this abominable practice. It's still wrong. Two wrongs don't make a right. Currently, the Arabs want to fly airplanes into buildings full of people. Should we embrace this practice as well?

Actually "we" didn't abolish slavery, i wasn't even born and i'll be damned if i will apologise for something that had nothing to do with me. Do you really think that when Blair apologises he really means it? Its just another opportunity for that self seeking git to try and look good for the public. How f***ing dare he! Descendants of slaves have cause to celebrate and they should remember that it was not only whites that were involved in the slave trade but Arabs ( and they still are) and Africans themselves.

I think my ancestors were still in Ireland and Scandinavia when slavery was being practiced, so I feel no responsibility to apologize. Logically speaking, though, if you look at Africa as a whole, the good old U.S. of A. is where I'd prefer to be. I think they should thank the slavery traders for the free ride over.

I didn't do it, my family didn't do it. When it was prevalent, it was legal and accepted by society. I would like to think that even if I had lived in the 1700s I would have thought owning a human being would have been wrong. I can't know for sure, because if I had owned slaves, I would have been providing them and their families with food and shelter in trade for their work.

none of my ancestors owned slaves, they came to America between 1800 and 1840 and were Irish and German immigrants. they worked in the Colorado silver mines and eventually settled in Illinois. I have at least two that fought with Sherman. These men helped to free the slaves as much as any common person. Where is the "Thank You" from blacks to people that helped them, risked their lives, and left family and children in a fight for decency? I have no intention of apologizing for something no one in my family had a part in. Not all "white" people are the same and it is ridiculous to lump them all in one bag as part of the system of slavery.
If a black man can prove that a white man living today has money and propery that an ancestor of his accumulated through slavery...owned an ancesor of his, then I would expect that rich fellow to repay the black man (once) for the benefit he enjoys today for the crimes of the past. Very hard to prove, but with genetics, possible

We shouldn't have to apologize, we didn't have any thing to do with it. If we took up a vote to bring back slavery then we would have something to be sorry for, but we agree with the abolition so therefore we are not at fault, are we. Nevertheless, we will always have to put up with being called racist just because our ancestors were.

I don't think we should apologize because most of us living today did not have slaves. Also, a vast majority of us do not have ancestors that owned slaves. My family is 2ND generation from Germany and the other half were very poor during that time and did not own a slave.

i do agree it is stupid to apologize for something no matter how awful that people you never knew did to people that werent known by their families either.people living today are not slaves in our country and i am glad they are not and it was wrong that their ancestors were also but there is a lot of blame to go around starting with their own peoples who sold them out to begin with, whats done is done let it go.
