In a nutshell, both were the first to write about real people and real issues of their time. Before them writers exaggerated human reactions and used flowery speeches with grand gestures. Both Ibsen and Chekhov worked hard to capture the everyday speech patterns in their societies.
This was so controversial and different, audiences rioted at some performances of some of each of their plays.
Differences? Chekhov wrote about upper class stagnancy and the oppression of class structure (poor vs. rich). Ibsen wrote about working class and wrote very strong and fully developed women, many times as the leads of the play. In his time, women were not considered equals by any stretch, so this was in and of itself very different for the time.

Chekhov was Russian and Ibsen was Norwegian...so, they were probably both cold a lot of the time.
