I was intending to install a dedicated 220v recepticle, but the cost of doing this verses buying a 3000 watt, 220v continuous use transformer (about $100-$150) seems somewhat cheaper and so much less labor intensive. I realize it's preferred to wire a permanent installation, but I'd like to save time and trouble. How simple to only have to plug in a transformer instead of spending a few days with a wiring project? How practicle is this implementation?

The washer has its own heating element (to augment the water temperature) which is documented to draw 2000 watts. From what I understand the transformer's capacity should exceed the appliance's wattage by at least 500 & the nearest transformer I have found online is 3000 watts (for continuous use).

If your washer is rated at 2KW energy consumption at 220V, then youd require at least 3KW continuous rating for the transformer. To be safe, you'd want to have a transformer somewhat over-rated for the task. A 3-4KW continuous rated step up transformer is a little pricey....somewhere around 100-200 dollars depending on where you buy it. As the previous poster mentioned, youd also need at least a 20 AMP circuit to plug the transformer into. You may very well get away with running a dedicated 220V circuit a lot cheaper.

I see you edited your post.....

If wiring isnt your thing, then the transformer route may be the way to go! Sounds like your on the right track.

If you are drawing about 10A with a 220V circuit, then feeding it with a step up transformer will double the current plus the losses from the transformer. So you will be pulling 20A from a 15A circuit.

It would be cheaper to just buy the Romex and run 12-3 w/grd from the breaker panel to a plug. Once it's done right, you won't have any more problems.

I would not recommend putting in a transformer like that in a home setting as they can become hot and possible cause a fire, If you have a dedicated 120 volt plug in the area of the washer you may be able to convert thatto 220 volts if the washer does not require a neutral wire. And you may not get alot of use out of the transformer as they can sometimes burn out quickly

Your best bet is to install a dedicated circuit. Check your dryer again, I've never seen an electric dryer that only required 15A to operate, all the ones I've ever seen and installed required a 240VAC 30A circuit breaker.

Barring that I'd recommend a gas dryer (if possible) as it will cost less in the long run to operate and only needs a 120VAC outlet to operate its motor.

Avoid anything temporary. Do it right the first time. Should it cause a fire later on down the road, you will be denied coverage from any insurance for an illegal installation.
