I really don't have any websites, dear that can fully give you astute information but I can tell you of some of my experiences. I had worked with gang members for years as well as with their older peers who were my co-workers. Here in San Antonio, Texas you will find many persons who are either in gangs or who had been in gangs in their youth.

The persons (mainly men) who were members of gangs in the past were indeed known as greasers (also known by not-so-nice names as cholos and chuckos). The reason for the "greaser" label heralds back to the oils and salves these gents would put in their hair to attain the "Elvis" look or the look of James Dean...both seen as rebels. Gangs in the past as gangs in the present want to present themselves as rebellious individuals. Gangs see themselves as revolutionaries (not unlike Che Guevera); gangs gather together in a psuedo-family type of a grouping. Many gang members today actually lack the true family setting in their own homes, therefore they join gangs in a move akin to joining a family.

As in the paragraph above, gangs of today and of yesteryear have many commonalities. They seek the familial groupings and the kinships. They have neighborhood areas "turfs" that they wish to defend (as in defense of kingdoms in the Middle Ages...these were probably some of the first gangs after the clans of cavemen/women in Prehistoric times). Gangs have always gained kinship by adopting familiar fashions and familiar music. "Old School" gangs enjoyed music of the 1950's and do-wop songs (I lived in Fresno, California in a barrio in 1980 where many of the F-14's had homes). Newer gangs love gangster rap. There are many similiarities in older gangs and new gangs.

Contrasts: "Old School" gangs had codes of honor. For example, older gangs would NEVER have used firearms/guns in defense of their turf. Older gangs fought with their fists and/or knives. New gangs see nothing wrong with using guns in defense of their turf. Older gangs would have been sickened by the "drive by" and indiscriminate shootings that are so frequent with the newer gangs. Older gangs respected family...especially older members of the families...the abuelitas, abuelitos, tias, tios, mamas, papas...even if they were family members of a rival gang member.

Older gangs respected chivalry. Men in older gangs would never have enjoyed the denigration and cursing in today's gangster rap music. Men in the "old school" respected their women, their societies and themselves not to use such concepts and such language to herald their cause.

Luckily, today many of the "Old School" ex-gang members are reaching out to the younger gang members in brotherhood/sisterhood. They want to put an end to the violence, chaos and hatred so prevalent today in our youth.

Hope this "experiential" information is helpful!
