I have a ten gallon tank with two ballon belly mollies in it(I am aware that they are going to be too big for the tank). i got the tank about a week and a half ago set it up the day i got it and let it cycle for about 7 days. I just got the about fish 3 days ago fish and it seems as if they arent getting enough air because they are gulping at the top of the tank. I've heard that it may be my water and i havent tested it or put anything special in it. so what are some things i could do to get them acting healthy again such as things i should put in the water or possibly something that will cycle in more air?

Hi Ryan,

I answered you previous question and with this new information I would lean towards the problem being ammonia levels climbing in the tank. Your tank didn't really begin to cycle until you added fish, unless you did a ishless cycle and even in that case 7 days wouldnt finish the cycle. I would suggest that you check the water for ammonia if possible and do a water change if the ammonia is high which I suspect it is. If you can't check the water, it would be quite safe to do a 30-40% water change anyway in case this is the problem. You will need to carefully watch the ammonia and do water changes every 2-3 days for the next 2 weeks or so to keep the ammonia lowered unti the tank cycles.

The problem is you did not cycle the tank. Letting it sit for 7 days is not cycling, unfortunatly. Read link below on cycling. The only thing you can do now is to either take the fish back to the store or start changing 50% of your water every day. Go get a liquid test kit so you can monitor ammonia, nitrite, nitrate.

I had a few fish acidents before I got the hang of it so now my fish have been living for almost a year, plus its just a guppy i raised from birth and the other is his uncle which is small and seethrough. I would get a bigger filter which will cycle more air or try cleaning the old one out. They could also just be asking for a treat,so I would go to your local pet store and get some fish treats. You never know they could have trained the fish with treats at the pet store.
Hope this helps!

Along with changing out water, try adding some stress zyme and stress coat to the water....they also have products you can add when changing out the water to take care of the ammonia problem......good luck

I have three goldfish. My fish swim up to the top like that when they're hungary. Try feeding them. Also, they might want cleaner water. Try changing their water.
