Sometimes when I'm really busy I just close the lid and shove it

By default most laptops go into hibernate mode when the cover is closed. This saves the entire memory and shuts off the power. When the cover is opened it powers back up and reloads the memory. This is much better than standby mode which is actually a low power mode rather than a power off.

The term sleep is sometimes used for either and can be confusing.

These are the power modes.

Complete power shutdown.

Put the computer on standby when it is idle. While on standby, your entire computer switches to a low-power state where devices, such as the monitor and hard disks, turn off and your computer uses less power. When you want to use the computer again, it comes out of standby quickly, and your desktop is restored exactly as you left it. Standby is particularly useful for conserving battery power in portable computers. Because Standby does not save your desktop state to disk, a power failure while on Standby can cause you to lose unsaved information.

Put your computer in hibernation. The hibernate feature saves everything in memory on disk, turns off your monitor and hard disk, and then turns off your computer. When you restart your computer, your desktop is restored exactly as you left it. It takes longer to bring your computer out of hibernation than out of standby.

Most laptops go into sleep mode when they are closed, thus shutting theirsef down and using zero battery.

Dont do it too often, if it is not in sleep mode, the hard drive spindle may end up hitting the platters if you jolt it hard, end result, bad hard drive sectors, meaning you may end up with an ill laptop :(

Just put it in sleep or hibernation, best way imo

No harm done. It goes into "sleep" mode when you close the lid.

Do Not carry it in the bag/case - if it is still running, which it even does in standy mode, it can overheat because there is no ventilation.

Actually that may be a bad idea, reason being that your harddrive spins and movement can cause friction and scratch your drive.
