44 Minutes: The North Hollywood Shootout.

The movie is pretty good, but if you can find some of the actual news footage, then I recommend it. That footage is intense with a capital I.

Here is the imdb.com page.

L.A. Takedown (1989) (TV)

L.A. Takedown is a crime/thriller made for TV movie that aired on NBC on August 27, 1989 at 9 pm. It was written and directed by Michael Mann, and its ensemble cast includes Scott Plank, Alex McArthur, Michael Rooker, Daniel Baldwin, and Xander Berkeley. Takedown starred Plank as Hanna and Alex McArthur as Patrick McLaren. The film was later remade as Heat, with Robert De Niro becoming Neil McCauley and Al Pacino becoming Hanna.

After making The Last of the Mohicans, Mann returned to a 1986 draft of L.A. Takedown, viewing the TV movie as a dry-run for what would become the 1995 feature film.

Mann took his script and cut it down from 180 pages to a leaner 110. Some changes in Heat include McCauley's gang not being fleshed out so much, the Chris Shiherlis sub-plot does not exist, the bungled bank robbery sting is gone, and Hanna's step-daughter's sub-plot is also gone. Mann only spent ten days on pre-production and 19 days of shooting for L.A. Takedown. In comparison, Heat would have a six-month pre-production period and a 107-day shooting schedule.
