You see, the trick to solving the cube is by completing layers. Here is a good video guide that has helped me:

I know that the website www.howstuffworks.com could be a resource for Rubic's Cube lovers. Quite a few of my disabled angels are able to solve these seemingly "difficult" puzzles with ease. Two autistic men at the workcenter where my clients go during the day are able to completely solve the Rubic's Cube within 2 minutes. Somehow the wiring in their brains is exquisitely and wonderfully complex where they can solve very difficult puzzles in a fraction of the time even "intelligent" folks are able to solve them. These two amazing gents also can tell you what they had for dinner on any given day of the week months and months ago. Their formidable brains' wiring enables them to do these things yet they have almost no social skills ability. Disabled folks have SO much to offer our world. Maybe one day our "enlightened" societies will finally realize this and utilize the sparkling abilities of these angels.

If your just looking for a generally short solution - I suggest you go to the Rubik's Homepage.
http://www.rubiks.com/lvl3/index_lvl3.cfm?lan=eng&lvl1=commun&lvl2=cbegam&lvl3=compet
Thats a video tutorial containing 8 steps by Tyson Mao. He solves it as if your looking at the cube, which is awesome. However, using this solution wont get you anywhere near speed cubing times.
