Jobs aren't hard to find ... provided you're willing to move to where the jobs are. Small-town newspapers are your easiest way into the profession. They give you the opportunity to write a lot and hone your skills, and to build up a strong set of published work you can then use to get a job at a bigger paper in a larger town or city.

As for degrees, it depends on who you talk to. The better writers I've come across have tended to be those with less formal education and more real-world experience. However, other editors who themselves went through journalism school are probably more apt to hire j-school grads.

An undergrad degree is good, and will provide you the chance to work on the school paper, but I don't think you need a master's.

I forgot to add this earlier: www.journalismjobs.com and mediabistro.com are both great sites for jobs.

Yes, there is a lot of competition, and you won't get an entry level job without a degree. I suggest English, journalism or communications.

A few years ago, I received 200 resumes for an entry level editorial position.
