I would compare him to Marina Cvetaieva, because of their passion for life. It`s rather hard to explain why have I remembered her when I saw Your question, but in her poems, and in her letters to friends, one has to feel the same strength as in Hemingway's books....I could definitely compare his Spanish days to her Moscow imprisonment....and perhaps their passionate characters, too.
