A 6.9 quake hit mainland Japan, (glad I don't live on the mainland!) and generated a 6" tsunami...

How do they know it's not just a bigger wave... only 6 inches bigger?

Waves don't travel as fast. They measure speed as well as height.

6 inches is pretty small though. Are you sure it wasn't 6 feet?

I read that.

A tiny ruler I guess?

They must have check areas where people watch for any surge and somehow they measure that- I would think it would make sense to round to the nearest foot
