Not at all, this has happened numerous times since the sixties. Recently, for example, the Montreal Expos of MLB moved to Washington, DC and became the Washington Nationals.

I'm sorry, the edit to the original question came in *after* I had answered. The edit clarifies that the asker wanted only teams that did not change cities. To that, I offer the Washington Wizards of the NBA, who up until 1995 were known as the Washington Bullets.

At various times in their history, the Brooklyn Dodgers were known as the Robins, the Superbas, the Bridegrooms, the Grooms, and the Grays, and the Atlantics...
The Boston Braves were, at various times, nicknamed the Bees, the Rustlers, the Doves, the Beaneaters, and the Red Caps.
Cincinnati Reds were previously nicknamed the Redlegs and Red Stockings.
The Cleveland Indians were formerly known as the Cleveland Naps (short for Napoleons, after Napoleon Lajoie), the Bronchos, and the Blues
The Phillies, for a few years around WWII I believe, were known as the Blue Jays, and years before that, the Quakers.
The St. Louis Cardinals were known as the Perfectos, the St. Louis Browns (the Browns of the old AL was a completely different franchise) and the Brown Stockings
and, finally, at various earlier points in time, the Cubs were nicknamed the Orphans, the Colts, and the White Stockings.

The Washington Bullets changed their name to the Wizards a few years ago without moving. (Well, technically they moved to a new arena, but they didn't switch cities.) The Angels keep changing their "city" name, though without changing their team name. The Tennessee Titans played as the Tennessee Oilers for a couple years before switching their name (though that name change came about with a move from Memphis to Nashville).
In Major League Soccer, the NY/NJ Metrostars changed their name to Red Bull New York last year, and FC Dallas used to be the Dallas Burn.

Before baseball was really big the Yankees were called the Highlanders and played in highlander park in upper Manhattan( I think it was Harlem) then in 1903 they moved to the Polo grounds right across the river from today's Yankee Stadium and were renamed the New york Yankees, they played in the polo grounds until 1923 when Yankee stadium was finished. That is not the the only team the Red Sox have changed there name a few times but have always been in Boston.

Hmm, well all I know is that the Oilers in the NFL moved to Tennessee and kept the name Oilers, but then they eventually changed it to the Titans.
Also, the the Washington Bullets changed their name to the Wizards.
Even in Major League Soccer, the San Jose Clash changed their name to the Earthquakes.
I'm sure there are probably several other examples, but for now that's all I can think of in a pinch. ;-)

There has been one other that I can come up with. The Washington Bullets changed their name to the Wizards in direct response to downplaying the crime problem in the D.C. area. And soccer teams don't count - too many different leagues through the years........
