Well, there are types of jerks:
1. The ones that dont know they´re jerks and if someone informed them they were, they still wouldnt care, they´d just continue being jerks.
2. The other type are the ones that also dont know they´re jerks but when told so, would try to change.
3. And the finally the 3rd kind of jerk are the kind that know that they´re jerks, and hence obviously dont care, cuz otherwise they would have changed a long time ago. This kind of jerk is obviously just as bad as the rest, however the interesting thing about this kind is that, they usually use their "jerkiness" persona to stop people from liking them or at least getting too close to them. So, its basically a really mean defense mechanism.
So yeah, if you´re really serious about moving on if your girlfriend gained weight, well then i guess that makes you the 3rd kind of jerk...so maybe you just havent met the right person yet, that would make you want to change enough to stop needing the "jerk persona". And yeah so to answer your question, the reason people insist on calling you a jerk even though you know it, is cuz you provoke it out of them.
