I'm teaching myself some basic electronics just as a hobby. My question is does the neg. lead on both a NPN & PNP transistor always connect to the neg. side of the power supply? I want to be able to build some basic electronics projects and know more than just where each component goes by looking at the directions. I know the proper way to learn this would be to study up on all different parts but this is purely as a as time allows hobby. Where can I find some information on circuit board design 101. Thanks

I mean, does the emitter lead on a transistor always connect to the negative side of the power supply?

Transistors can go into circuits at all voltage levels. Often, you'll put them above ground with a resistor and/or a capacitor/resistor parallel circuit. You'll probably be best served buying an electronics text from your local junior college bookstore. Or check out something at the local library. Also there are magazines that show electronic diagrams for small projects. I wouldn't be surprised to find stuff like that online as well. Lots of ways to go for the amateur. It really depends on what you want.

My answer to 'Always' questions is almost (wink) always no.

Assuming a negative ground system, the negative or drain lead on the transistor does go to ground typically.

I encourage your approach.. and have my own idea to offer. I have about 6 or 7 garage sale addicts that I know. I give them each 5 bucks and ask them to buy me stuff with wires. When they do (and when I can afford it), I replenish their budget.

In short order you'll have all kinds of devices to explore/cannibalize/throw away and eventually know how to repair.

A word of caution, though. CRT's (television sets, tube monitors for computers) and Microwave ovens CAN KILL YOU. Please, please do not include these in your inventory of stuff taken apart.

Learn what a capacitor looks like and how to safely drain it- even what looks like a small one can ruin your day or your heart.

As a habit, I wear an ESD strap (properly grounded) on my LEFT hand, work on a grounded table while while sitting/standing on a rubber mat. It helps protect sensitive circuits, my safety, and the women that are into geeks (they are out there) appreciate the complete package.

Try a book on basic electricity and electronics from the library.

I don't know if they are still in business but Heath Kits always had some good kits (project) that also gave the theory as to how it worked when you were bulding the kit. They also had some quality products, when you got finished.
